How to replace a flat tire by yourself

Here are the steps to replace a flat tire on your own.

How to replace a flat tire by yourself

Find a safe spot to change your tire

Look for a flat, stable surface away from traffic.

Turn on your hazard lights

Make sure other drivers can see that you are stopped.

Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts

Do not remove them yet, just loosen them a bit.

Use a jack to lift the car

Check your owner's manual for the correct location to place the jack. Place the jack under the car and pump it up until the tire is off the ground.

Remove the lug nuts

Use the lug wrench to fully remove the lug nuts and take the flat tire off.

Put on the spare tire

Carefully align the spare tire with the wheel bolts and push it onto the wheel base. Put the lug nuts back on by hand.

Tighten the lug nuts

Use the lug wrench to tighten the lug nuts as much as possible in a star pattern.

Lower the car

Use the jack to lower the car back down to the ground.

Tighten the lug nuts again

Use the lug wrench to tighten the lug nuts fully, once again in a star pattern.

Check the tire pressure

Make sure the spare tire is inflated to the recommended pressure.

Store the flat tire and tools

Put the flat tire and the tools back in your trunk or storage area.

Note, Spare tires are not designed for long-term use and should be replaced with a new tire as soon as possible. Also, if you are not comfortable changing a tire by yourself, it's best to call a professional for help.
