A deadly shooting at Florida State University shocked the campus and wider community, resulting in the death of two people and multiple injuries. The suspect, a student named Phoenix Ikner, was apprehended at the scene after a confrontation with police.
Florida State University Campus Shooting Suspect Identified
The shooting occurred shortly before noon on April 17, 2025, near the Student Union on FSU's main campus in Tallahassee. According to authorities, 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner arrived in a bright orange Hummer and attempted to fire a shotgun that malfunctioned. He then switched to a handgun and opened fire, discharging approximately 15 rounds in under 30 seconds. The sudden violence created panic as students ran for safety, with some hiding inside nearby buildings and even inside a freight elevator.
University police, along with city officers, responded rapidly. Ikner, who reportedly ignored verbal commands, was shot by officers and taken into custody. He and several victims were transported to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, where they were listed in fair condition.
Tragically, two adult men with no affiliation to the university were killed. Five individuals were wounded by gunfire, and one more sustained injuries while trying to flee the scene. Authorities confirmed that the quick response of campus law enforcement likely prevented additional casualties.
Investigators identified the shooter as a currently enrolled FSU student and the son of a Leon County Sheriff's deputy. The handgun used in the attack was formerly assigned to his mother during her time with the sheriff’s office. Officials have not released a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.
In the aftermath, FSU canceled all classes and events through the weekend. University President Richard McCullough expressed his condolences and urged the community to come together during this difficult time. Increased security measures were also implemented as a precaution.
This tragic event brings renewed attention to the threat of gun violence in academic settings. It highlights the importance of rapid emergency response, mental health awareness, and the need for continued efforts to secure educational institutions.
As someone deeply moved by the resilience shown by students and staff, I believe this incident should strengthen our collective commitment to fostering safer campuses. It is a heartbreaking reminder of how swiftly lives can be changed by violence, and why vigilance and compassion must remain at the core of our communities.
